US Senate confirms Indian-American Richard for top State Dept position

United States Senate on Thursday confirmed Indian American Richard Verma as Deputy Secretary of State, Management and Resources, a position which is normally seen as the CEO of the powerful State Department in the US Government. Verma, 54, was confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 67-26.

Indian origin transport minister of Singapore, S Iswaran, pleaded not guilty of 27 charges labelled against him on Thursday. With political career spanning 26 years, Iswaran was facing two corruption charges under Prevention of Corruption Act one of obstructing justice and 24 of receiving gratification as a public servant under Penal Code.
